I work with a lot of people on their nutrition and figuring out what supplements they need to be taking. My goal is to help them be as healthy as possible, which will help them perform at their highest level.
The first thing I always look at is food. You can take all the supplements in the world, but if your core diet is not healthy, those supplements aren’t going to help much. I recommend a diet that is as clean as possible with lots of vegetables and good sources of protein.
However, there are a few supplements that most people can benefit from.
As you workout, and sweat, you lose minerals and resources from your body. These minerals are necessary for most reactions in your body. For example, in order for a muscle to contract, potassium and magnesium are a couple minerals that are needed to make that muscle work appropriately. If you don’t have the proper amount of minerals, it will inhibit your ability to use your muscles to the best of their abilities.
Minerals are found in many foods – like vegetables, meats, and nuts. However, because of modern farming techniques, most vegetables don’t have the same amount of minerals they once did. As a result, many people can lack the proper amount of minerals in their body. Taking a mineral complex is an inexpensive and easy way to ensure you have enough minerals in your body.
Your digestive tract is one of the most important organs in your body because it feeds all other organs. It is the place where your body takes in nutrients and distributes them where they are needed. If your digestive tract is not functioning properly, the rest of your body won’t function the way it should either.
Within your digestive tract, there are good bacteria that are essential for your health. These bacteria are often compromised due to things like antibiotic drugs, sugar, dairy and gluten. Taking a probiotic supplement will boost your good bacteria and can help with a number of problems people have, such as irritable bowel syndrome, digestive problems, waking up with nausea, and stomach issues, to name a few.
A lot of protein powders contain probiotics, so you might want to check to see if yours does, or try to find one that has it included.
I recommend that many people take a protein supplement. It’s easy to throw into smoothies or mix in with food. Protein helps you recover faster from workouts and is critical for building muscle and increasing performance. In addition, I find that most people who are restricting their diet end up not getting enough protein, which can work against them in the long run.
However, there are a lot of bad protein powders out there, often including a lot of sugar and fillers. The best kind of protein is plant based, such as pea or hemp proteins. Whey protein absorbs a bit better in the body, but most people do not require an excessive amount of muscle building, and plant protein is always much cleaner. It’s important that you find a protein that is as clean as possible, meaning free of sugar and a lot of additives. Make sure to read the ingredients on the label. Sugar has many names so don’t be fooled. Most good proteins will say ‘No added sugars’ on the label.
Overall, these supplements are what most people could benefit from. However, when I work with clients, I analyze each persons diet for their specific needs. Depending on their diet and activity level, I can add or remove supplements depending on what they need.
